Lyric Dance and Vocal Ensemble is auditioning singers, dancers and actors for our upcoming December 2013 production of "Go Tell It!" Held the weekend before Christmas, this second annual holiday musical theater production tells the story of Harriet Tubman’s escape on the Underground Railroad with her three brothers. This moving story is told through Spirituals.

 

Actors are needed to play the roles of:

  • Older Harriet Tubman (in her 70s)

  • Younger Harriet Tubman (in her 30s)

  • Harriet Tubman’s husband

  • Harriet Tubman’s three brothers (one in his early 20s, one on his late 20s and one in his 30s)

  • Harriet Tubman’s two sister-in-laws

  • Sarah Bradford – Tubman biographer

  • William Still – abolitionist and Underground Railroad Conductor

 

Ideally, actors (Harriet, brothers and sisters-in-law) will also be dancers who specialize in modern, contemporary and/or lyrical dance. HOWEVER, especially gifted actors will be considered regardless of dance ability. Dancers who also act will also be considered for these roles. Dancers should be comfortable improvising.

 

Singers of all voice types, who are familiar with Spirituals, are needed to play ensemble roles as ancestors and people in/around the plantation. Singers should be comfortable singing harmony and improvising.

 

For the audition:

  • Singers, prepare to sing a Spiritual of your choosing and improvise harmony to a Spiritual of the audition panel’s choosing.

  • Actors, prepare two monologues (dramatic and comical) and be prepared to read a scene from the script.

  • Dancers, prepare a contemporary lyrical or contemporary dance (no longer than 2 minutes) to a Spiritual. Dancers should also prepare to improvise to a Spiritual of the audition panel’s choosing.

Auditions will be held August 18th 2013 at Studio 1924 (1924 Franklin St, Oakland, CA 94612) from 2 to 6 pm. All roles are open. Non-AEA, no pay. Please bring conflict calendars with you to your audition. Rehearsals will begin on September 22nd.
